Coorg is one of the tourist favorite hill stations in South India. Coorg, also known as Kodagu district, is fondly called the ‘Scotland of South India’. Best time to Visit Coorg:
The summers in Coorg are pleasant with an average of 25 degrees Celsius, while the temperature in winter could drop as low as 10 degrees Celsius. Coorg receives average to heavy rainfall during the monsoons and can be the reason for roadblocks, hence it’s better to avoid monsoon if you are not an avid fan of rains (read heavy rains!!) For a relaxing trip, it is ideal to visit Coorg from September to June.
Visit duration: It is preferable to plan for a two days trip to Coorg/Madikeri, where you will comfortably be able to cover a handful of places.
How to reach Coorg from Bangalore?
- By car: Coorg is at a distance of 265 kms from Bangalore, and hence it takes 5 to 6 hours approximately to reach by car.
- By bus: There are direct routes available from Bangalore to Coorg, and this takes around 9 hours to reach. Daily buses both private and government ply between Bangalore and Coorg. Take a night bus and you will reach Madikeri, the main town of Coorg by 5 or 6 AM in the morning easily.
- By train: There are no direct trains available from Bangalore. The nearest train station is Mysore, which has a lot of passengers coming from Bangalore daily. You will have to take the local bus service or a taxi to reach Coorg. It is at a distance of 118 kms from Mysore, and it takes 2 to 3 hours to reach Coorg.

Places to See in Coorg:
- Madikeri fort, initially built by Muddu Raja in the 17th century, by mud, was rebuilt in granite by Tipu Sultan. It now displays the rich collection of artifacts and weapons used during his reign.
- Abbey falls, where the water flows from a height of 70 feet and is surrounded by lush greenery. This place is immersed in the rich aroma of coffee and spices from the plantations nearby and makes the whole area feel magical.
- Talacauvery is the origin place of the River Cauvery. This is considered a sacred place and is a significant tourist attraction. It is located at 1,276 meters above sea level, on the Brahmagiri hill.
- Namdroling Monastery or the Golden temple is a place of learning for the Tibetian Buddhists. They have colorful, massive tower structures and paintings that depict the various moments from Buddha’s life and the Buddhist culture.
- One of the best-known wildlife reserves in India, Nagarhole National Park, houses a variety of wildlife and vegetation.
- Irupu falls – One of the most popular waterfalls to visit in South Coorg, which is also known as the Lakshmana Tirtha Falls. The falls lie in the Brahma Giri range and one needs to cover a forest trail to reach the main viewpoint.
- Mandalpatti or mugilpete, a beautiful viewpoint located around 25-30 kms from the main town of Madikeri. It is a popular trekking spot, however, bike enthusiasts consider riding atop the hill on their two-wheelers. Additionally, one can opt for a jeep ride as well.
- Dubare elephant camp, situated at the banks of river Kaveri, is one of the most popular places to visit in Coorg. There are plenty of activities one can indulge in this elephant training camp.

- Watching the mesmerizing sunrise and sunset from Raja’s seat. It is filled with beautiful flowers, bushes, and artificial fountains, which tourists rejoice.
